What can do to improve performance, feed your big fat brain, and soothe your soul at the same time?
An ACTUAL BOOK.
In all of the busyness of running my speaking business, I got out of the habit of snuggling under a blanket in my favorite chair, having a cup of chai tea, and immersing myself in a world outside of my glowing screens. However, I was recently inspired by a post by productivity guru Michael Hyatt who challenged his tribe to read 20 minutes every day.
Last week I dove into my friend Nancy's book, and this week it is a recommendation from one of my improv friends at the Brave New Workshop. At first it feels naughty to simply sit in silence and read. “Shouldn’t I be doing REAL work?”, I ask myself. However, I also know that my resistance to quiet learning is just a response to the frenetic, overly-stimulated world in which we live.
Being a reader will make you better at your job. It will make you a more interesting conversationalist. It will make you a more informed citizen. It will make you more powerful. It will make you more money. It will make you BETTER.
So, dear one, crack open that book. If you don’t have one you’d like to read, order it now or stop by the library later. Your brain, your pocketbook, and your spirit will thank you.
